Project Overview
Amid a concerning spike in HIV/AIDS cases in Mbarara and the larger Ankole Region, I led the design and execution of an HIV/AIDS Outbreak Survey to assess risk factors, public awareness, and healthcare accessibility. This survey provided valuable data to support targeted intervention strategies aimed at reducing transmission rates and improving healthcare services.
Objectives
-
Identify key factors contributing to the recent increase in HIV cases.
-
Assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to HIV prevention and treatment.
-
Understand barriers to HIV testing and healthcare access.
-
Provide data-driven recommendations for public health interventions.
Methodology
I developed a structured survey using ODK XLSForm for mobile data collection, covering:
-
Demographics (age, gender, education, occupation)
-
Sexual behavior and HIV risk factors
-
Knowledge and awareness of HIV transmission and prevention
-
Testing history and access to healthcare services
-
Community perceptions and stigma
Key Outcomes
-
Identified knowledge gaps and misconceptions about HIV transmission.
-
Highlighted barriers to HIV testing, including stigma and healthcare accessibility.
-
Provided actionable insights to support targeted prevention campaigns and policy adjustments.
Technologies Used
-
ODK & KoboToolbox for mobile-based data collection.
-
Excel & Python for data cleaning, analysis, and visualization.
-
GIS Mapping for geographic analysis of high-risk areas.
Impact
The survey findings informed local health authorities and organizations, helping to refine HIV prevention programs, improve testing accessibility, and address stigma-related challenges. By leveraging data science for public health, this project demonstrates my ability to design, analyze, and apply data-driven solutions to pressing health challenges.
